Advice from Harry Anderson

From the Dallas Observer:

"Everyone's life would be improved if they do could one great magic trick," said Anderson, winding up. "And tell one great joke, play one tune on the piano and do one great origami fold."

The road to happiness

"The road to happiness lies in two simple principles: find what it is that interests you and that you can do well, and when you find it put your whole soul into it-every bit of energy and ambition and natural ability you have."

Invent your own life's meaning

From the Huffington Post:

Bill Watterson retired from writing and drawing "Calvin & Hobbes" about 18 years ago, but the timelessness of his message -- to always remain thoughtful, imaginative, and playful -- will stick in our culture forever, if we're lucky. Case in point: Cartoonist Gavin Aung Than, who pens comics on his blog Zen Pencils, created this tribute to Watterson that has struck a chord with the Internet over the last few days.

Wordsworth: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: -
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company:
I gazed -and gazed -but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

Contronyms: Words that are their own opposites

From Mental Floss, 14 Words That Are Their Own Opposites:

Here’s an ambiguous sentence for you: “Because of the agency’s oversight, the corporation’s behavior was sanctioned.” Does that mean, 'Because the agency oversaw the company’s behavior, they imposed a penalty for some transgression' or does it mean, 'Because the agency was inattentive, they overlooked the misbehavior and gave it their approval by default'? We’ve stumbled into the looking-glass world of “contronyms”—words that are their own antonyms.

Good to know: How to avoid costly running up costly bills on iPhone, iPad and Android apps

From the Telegraph:

A five-year-old boy has run up a £1,700 bill in just ten minutes while playing on his parents' iPad. Computer refuses to sleep or hibernate following a Windows update

Dear Windows Update:

In the future, please do not change my device settings that prevent the device being able to wake the computer, to being able to wake my computer.  At least, please don't do this without telling me you did.

There's nothing fun about the fresh panic that follows when your computer refuses to sleep or hibernate.

Thank you to the good folks at Vista Forums for the troubleshooting thread Vista Won't Sleep Properly.

Yours truly,
