Heads or ....

From Joey deVilla's blog:

A Psychological Tip

Whenever you’re called on to make up your mind,
and you’re hampered by not having any,
the best way to solve the dilemma, you’ll find,
is simply by spinning a penny.
No — not so that chance shall decide the affair
while you’re passively standing there moping;
but the moment the penny is up in the air,
you suddenly know what you’re hoping.

Holiday treat round-up

Icebox cookies

I like to make the dough and keep at least one or two rolled dough sticks in the freezer over the holidays. The cookies can easily and quickly be baked should you find yourself hosting unexpected company, or find yourself craving fresh baked cookies!

Magicana: The magic beyond the magic

Magic (from Wikipedia):

Magic is a performing art that entertains an audience by creating illusions of seemingly impossible or supernatural feats, using purely natural means. These feats are called magic tricks, effects or illusions.

Magicana, through it's My Magic Hands program, touches the lives of children by using magic as a vehicle to build self confidence and skills such as communication, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving. They bring their wonderful program to children with cancer and kids affected by childhood cancer by working with Camp Oochigeas to create special events like "Boot Camp Magic Day." My Magic Hands has also been offering sessions at Holland Bloorview (Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation hospital) for six years. It's obvious the joy that magic can bring into a young child's life.

What's not immediately obvious, however, are the other magical things that happen during this process. Friendships and mentorships are created between the volunteer magic coaches and the My Magic hands participants. Volunteers are reminded of childhood awe and joy as they catch a glimpse of how young eyes see and interpret the magical routines. The coaches facillitate the magic learning, bask in the glow of the magical relationship and reflect back to the children, the image of the best they can be.

Like a pebble thrown into a still pond, the magic of magic can extend far beyond the performer and the intended effect.

Thank you Magicana, for starting the ripple that extends ever outwards!

Fuzzy wuzzy

Overheard on the playground:

Fuzzy Wuzzy
Was a bear,
Fuzzy Wuzzy
Had no hair,
Fuzzy Wuzzy
Wasn't really fuzzy,
Wuzzy?

Back at the line drawings again. (Er, line drawing, at any rate.)

Prophet? Really?

I can't speak to that, but he is a very entertaining mind reader!

Bolero pattern

If you're looking for a pattern from which to sew a Bolero, have a look at Bolero Patterns and Shrug Patterns for some free ideas.

I recently completed the Simple Bolero and the pattern was easy to follow. (It took me longer to make it than the estimated completion time. However, I expect that speaks to my sewing skills more than anything else.)

I can't speak to the content, but I found the animation to be very compelling.

The content was taken from a speech given at the RSA by Sir Ken Robinson.

AMBER Alert Ontario

From their website:

The Ontario AMBER Alert is a warning system that quickly alerts the public of abducted children who are in imminent danger.

The participation of the public is essential to the success of AMBER Alert. The information you provide to police may help an abducted child before it is too late.

We can take action together to protect and safely recover abducted children.

From the CTV.ca website:

OPP say information posted on the social networking website could reach millions of users who can help in the search for abducted children.

Authorities hope Canada's 15 million Facebook users, including seven million in Ontario, can help them in the first crucial three to five hours after a child is abducted.

Sir Patrick Stewart in Macbeth

From the PBS website:

Following a London West End run in December 2007, a sold-out limited engagement at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in March 2008, and a subsequent eight-week run on Broadway, director Rupert Goold’s gripping stage production of Macbeth was filmed for television at the end of 2009.

The co-production between WNET.ORG and Illuminations Television, in association with the BBC, stars Sir Patrick Stewart in his triumphant, Tony-nominated performance as the ambitious general, and Tony-nominated Kate Fleetwood as his coldly scheming wife.

The production, though retaining the Goold’s exciting concept of relocating the bloody action to a nameless 20th-century militaristic society, has been rethought in vivid filmic terms. The movie, marking Goold’s cinematic debut, will be presented on PBS as part of the Great Performances series Wednesday, October 6, at 9 p.m. (check local listings).

If this is anywhere near as good as the performance of Hamlet they ran earlier this year, we're in for a real treat!
